George Dibdin-Pitt

George Dibdin-Pitt (1799-1855) was a British actor, stage manager and prolific playwright, specializing in melodrama. Dibdin-Pitt invented the fictional character Sweeney Todd, whom he termed "The Fiend of Fleet Street", according to his subtitle. The play, ''The String of Pearls'', based on a serial story by Thomas Preckett Prest, was produced in 1847 at the Hoxton Theatre.〔(PBS: "Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" )〕 His melodrama fictionalizing the career of the highwayman Dick Turpin was produced in London in 1845.
